A GPA calculator is useful only when the inputs match your school’s grading rules. This guide explains how to calculate unweighted, weighted, semester, and cumulative GPA, shows repeatable examples, and provides a worksheet you can reuse whenever new grades arrive or you plan future courses.
Overview
Grade point average, or GPA, is a summary of your grades expressed as points and averaged across courses. The basic calculation is straightforward, but the result can change depending on the grading scale, course credits, and whether advanced classes receive extra weight.
An unweighted GPA assigns the same maximum point value to every course. On a common four-point scale, an A may equal 4.0, a B 3.0, a C 2.0, and a D 1.0. A weighted GPA adds extra points for approved advanced, honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or similarly designated classes. The exact rules differ by school, so a GPA calculator should be treated as an estimate unless its scale matches your official transcript policy.
A semester GPA covers one grading period. A cumulative GPA combines multiple terms, usually by adding all quality points and dividing by all attempted credits or courses. It is not always accurate to average two semester GPAs directly, especially when the semesters contain different numbers of credits.

How to estimate your GPA
Unweighted GPA from grades
When every course counts equally, use this formula:
Unweighted GPA = total grade points ÷ number of courses
For example, suppose a student earns an A, B, B, and C in four equally weighted courses. Using the assumed values A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and C = 2.0, the calculation is:
(4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4 = 3.0
The estimated unweighted GPA is 3.00. If your school uses plus and minus grades, enter the exact point values from its handbook rather than assuming that every B, for example, has the same value.
Credit-weighted GPA
If courses have different credit values, calculate quality points for each course:
Quality points = grade points × course credits
Then use:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits
This method prevents a half-credit course from counting the same as a full-credit course when your institution weights courses by credit.
Weighted GPA
For a weighted GPA, start with the unweighted value for each course and add the approved bonus specified by your school. One possible worksheet might use a 0.5-point addition for an approved honors course and a 1.0-point addition for another advanced course, but those values are examples only. Your school may use a different system, cap the maximum points, or calculate weighted and unweighted GPAs separately.
The general formula is:
Weighted course points = base grade points + approved course weighting
After finding the weighted points for each class, average them in the same way as unweighted points, or use credit weighting if required.
Inputs and assumptions to check
Before entering grades into a GPA calculator, confirm the rules that control the result. Small input errors can produce a number that looks precise but does not match your transcript.
- Grading scale: Identify whether the school uses a four-point scale, plus and minus values, percentages converted to points, or another system.
- Course credits: Check whether every class is worth the same amount. If not, use credit-weighted quality points.
- Weighting: Verify which courses qualify for extra points. A course title alone may not tell you how it is classified.
- Repeated courses: Find out whether the original grade remains in the GPA, is replaced, or is included alongside the repeated attempt.
- Pass/fail classes: Determine whether these courses contribute credits without contributing grade points.

Worked examples
Example 1: Semester GPA with equal courses
A student has five equally weighted courses with grades A, A, B, B, and C. On the assumed four-point scale, the points are 4.0, 4.0, 3.0, 3.0, and 2.0.
(4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 5 = 3.20
The estimated semester GPA is 3.20 unweighted.
Example 2: GPA with different credits
Suppose a student earns an A in a four-credit course, a B in a three-credit course, and a C in a one-credit course.
- A: 4.0 × 4 credits = 16 quality points
- B: 3.0 × 3 credits = 9 quality points
- C: 2.0 × 1 credit = 2 quality points
Total quality points equal 27, and total credits equal 8. Therefore:
27 ÷ 8 = 3.375
Rounded to two decimal places, the estimated GPA is 3.38. A simple average of 4.0, 3.0, and 2.0 would be 3.00, which shows why credit values matter.
Example 3: Cumulative GPA planning
A student has completed 30 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.10 and is about to complete 15 additional credits with an estimated GPA of 3.60. First convert each period into quality points:
- Completed work: 30 × 3.10 = 93 quality points
- New work: 15 × 3.60 = 54 quality points
- Combined total: 147 quality points across 45 credits
147 ÷ 45 = 3.266...
The projected cumulative GPA is approximately 3.27. This estimate assumes all credits use the same GPA rules and that the new courses are included in the cumulative calculation.
When to recalculate
Recalculate your GPA whenever a final grade is posted, a course is added or removed, a grade is changed, or your school updates the academic record. It is also useful to calculate a projected GPA before choosing a course load, particularly when advanced courses have different weighting rules.
For a target-GPA estimate, use this formula:
Required future GPA = (target quality points − current quality points) ÷ future credits
For example, if you want to plan toward a target, first multiply your current GPA by completed credits. Then subtract that total from the quality points required for the target GPA across all completed and future credits. The result shows the average needed in the remaining coursework. Treat this as a planning estimate, not a guarantee, because course credits and institutional policies may vary.
Keep a simple record with these columns: term, course, credits, grade, base points, weighting adjustment, and quality points. Update it after each grading period. If your estimate differs from the official GPA, compare the grading scale, transferred credits, repeated courses, pass/fail entries, and rounding method first. When the discrepancy remains, ask your registrar, counselor, or academic adviser which entries are included.
