Cumulative GPA across two terms
Assume a student earns a 3.20 GPA over 15 credits in the first term and a 3.60 GPA over 12 credits in the second term. First convert each term GPA back into quality points:
- First term: 3.20 × 15 = 48.0 quality points
- Second term: 3.60 × 12 = 43.2 quality points
Combined quality points are 91.2, and combined credits are 27. The cumulative GPA is 91.2 ÷ 27 = 3.38. Averaging 3.20 and 3.60 directly would give 3.40, which is slightly different because the terms contain different numbers of credits.
